Our Story

Gallery of Sound was founded by Joe Nardone Sr., who started with a tiny store on Northampton Street in Wilkes-Barre, selling 45s at a time when albums weren't yet popular for pop and rock music. From there he expanded to the Wayne Department Store in Kingston, with additional Wayne locations in Taylor, PA and New Jersey. In 1972, he opened the first Gallery of Sound in the Wyoming Valley Mall, which became the centerpiece of retail in the region following the flood of 1972. He continued growing the business throughout the local area. When Joe Nardone Jr. graduated college in 1988, he joined the family business during the CD boom. The company expanded to 11 locations across Pennsylvania, a run that lasted through the '90s and into the 2000s. The Napster era brought significant challenges. Today, Gallery of Sound proudly operates two locations in Wilkes-Barre and Dickson City.

Community Roots

Gallery of Sound is a family-owned business that has been part of the NEPA community for over 50 years. Joe Nardone Jr. grew up in the area, returned after college to build the business, and has remained deeply invested in the region ever since. Joe serves as a board member at Back Mountain Soccer Club, Back Mountain Recreation, and the Irem Temple Restoration Committee, a reflection of the store's long-standing commitment to the community it calls home.

Local Artists We Have Supported

Gallery of Sound has worked with countless local artists over the decades, hosting in-store performances and meet-and-greets with bands that have gone on to become national touring acts: Breaking Benjamin, Motionless In White, Title Fight, The Menzingers, Tigers Jaw, Aaron Fink, Dustin Douglas.

Record Store Day

Record Store Day was founded by a retail coalition that Gallery of Sound was a part of. Joe Nardone Jr. was in the room when the idea was first proposed, over 20 years ago. Today it is the biggest single day of the year for more than 1,500 stores across the United States, and is celebrated across Europe and in Japan.
